Hi Web-Pubbers,

Pantheon just announced a new hosting plan, “Pantheon for EDU.”  I urge everyone to sign up and check it out, and forward this to any colleague building academic sites.  This is exactly the hosting structure that I’m convinced will become the dominant academic hosting strategy, because of the way it centralizes and systematizes development within a given academic unit, whether it’s a department, a school, or a research center. 

I’ve moved all my MIT energy and sustainability sites (energy club, energy conference, clean energy prize, etc) into one plan, and the sites I’m building for research centers into another. But by and large, one account is all you need. You can spin up as many sites as you want within that, though the limit for free sites is set at 12 sites. For the research center account, I’m creating a set of MIT-specifics features (projects, publications, people, research, events, etc), so that these features are available to all the sites, with complete documentation. This truly isn’t brain science. The development structure makes it incredibly easy to base your work in a git repository, so that all your sites are built from the same code base, and the same for the features built for that distribution. The gain in maintainability, efficiency, and power is just tremendous.

Getting the hosting right is a key step to improving academic web development, and I think Pantheon gets it exactly right with this new platform.
