Duties & Responsibilities The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seeks a forward-thinking Database
Specialist. Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, the Database
Specialist will work with staff to analyze
opportunities and requirements for business applications and any associated
process modifications to improve the quality/efficiency of business
functions. This position will also
manage, verify, troubleshoot and resolve issues having to do with systems data
and data quality to support the Development and Public Programs departments in
particular, and other Arboretum groups as needed.
Responsibilities include developing and executing
project plans and risk assessments for system enhancements; developing and
documenting business process flow diagrams, business requirements, and
functional specs; and acting as a liaison between Arboretum IT, Harvard University
IT and business groups, to understand and communicate business needs and issues
across these groups. This highly visible role will work closely with staff
to support new and legacy database applications, and regularly interact with
senior administrators and key stakeholders. The successful candidate will have
extensive experience using and programming in multiple technologies and has the
ability to work closely and effectively with the Informatics team, and
both technical and non-technical research and administrative staff.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Manage a range of projects and tools that enable the Arboretum to
deliver faster, more accurate empirical data to staff leadership, and
other organizations to support philanthropic engagement . Work
closely with the development team to define requirements and create data
entry tools that fit the needs of the data and end-users, and act as
department liaison to the Common Alumni Affairs Development System (CAADS)
group. Identify
workflow issues and propose solutions, draft and maintain documentation
and procedures for reporting and data flows. Develop
and enhance systems for event and activity registration and management. Provide training and documents to guide the
departmental users of new IT systems. Contribute
to setting of standards for database objects and ensure conformance to
these standards. Provide
statistical support and analysis while advising staff on proper data
usage. Work
closely with key members of technical teams and product teams in the
identification and documentation of technical requirements. Report
to the Director of IT and develop and employ technologies that will
improve and streamline business workflows. Provide
creative, user-friendly tools for capture of data from direct observation,
electronic databases, unstructured data, and other sources. Conduct basic
descriptive statistical analysis (counts, means, standard distribution,
correlation) on categorical and ordinal data. Analyze,
evaluate, and synthesize complex and large datasets from various sources
and produce highly readable, informative reports. Work
within the existing structures and protocols and make recommendations as
necessary. Develop
solid working relationships with end-users, staff, management, consultants
and vendors.
Basic Qualifications A B.A./B.S. in MIS, CS, business administration, or related field;
minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a technical environment
Knowledge and proven ability to work with various technology stacks
needed: Windows, Oracle, LAMP, .NET, SQL
(MS SQL Server and/or MySQL), Excel, Filemaker Pro and MS Access.
Experience with database reporting, querying, structures and design
required.
Working knowledge of relational database technology, preferably,
experience moving data from one database and front end to another with focus on
data quality control.
Additional Qualifications Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills.
Detail-oriented and familiar with best practices for testing and product
lifecycles.
Familiar with custom development processes as well as product
implementation processes.
Excellent relationship building skills, especially customer service
skills.
Experience working with document management systems like SharePoint or
equivalent. Ability to maintain and enhance software and analyze new software
for applicability.
In
addition, preferably 5-10 years’ experience doing maintenance, analysis and
design; a flexible approach and the ability to see each project/situation as
different and to see both the big and little picture and how they fit together;
solid analytical skills including requirements gathering; functional design
experience; an exceptional customer-focused approach in client relationship
management; strong verbal and written technical and business communication
skills; ability to analyze data through SQL queries; business analysis
experience with custom, web-based business applications; awareness of
enterprise system technologies and interface techniques; experience eliciting
and documenting requirements, with minimal direction, that result in quality
deliverables; ability to apply structure to complex, loosely defined problems;
and knowledge of the system development life cycle; superior
interpersonal skills; accuracy; flexibility; a history of demonstrating tact
and diplomacy in communications with a wide variety of constituents .
Ideal candidates have ability to
understand, distill and convert the hopes and needs of complex projects into a solutions.
Demonstrated ability/experience with information architecture. Capacity and
desire to experiment with web technologies, and deploy them effectively.
Oriented towards customer service; sets and manages priorities with minimal
supervision; adept at working with both non-technical and technical people.
Experience is ideal, but enthusiasm and eagerness to learn are equally
important.
