<td class="TGAlignLeft" width="80%"><span class="TEXT" id="Duties & Responsibilities">The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seeks a forward-thinking Database <br>
Specialist. Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, the Database <br>
Specialist will work with staff to analyze <br>
opportunities and requirements for business applications and any associated <br>
process modifications to improve the quality/efficiency of business <br>
functions. This position will also <br>
manage, verify, troubleshoot and resolve issues having to do with systems data <br>
and data quality to support the Development and Public Programs departments in <br>
particular, and other Arboretum groups as needed.<br>
<br>
Responsibilities include developing and executing <br>
project plans and risk assessments for system enhancements; developing and <br>
documenting business process flow diagrams, business requirements, and <br>
functional specs; and acting as a liaison between Arboretum IT, Harvard University <br>
IT and business groups, to understand and communicate business needs and issues <br>
across these groups. This highly visible role will work closely with staff <br>
to support new and legacy database applications, and regularly interact with <br>
senior administrators and key stakeholders. The successful candidate will have <br>
extensive experience using and programming in multiple technologies and has the <br>
ability to work closely and effectively with the Informatics team, and <br>
both technical and non-technical research and administrative staff. <br>
<br>
Duties include, but are not limited to:<br>
Manage a range of projects and tools that enable the Arboretum to <br>
deliver faster, more accurate empirical data to staff leadership, and <br>
other organizations to support philanthropic engagement . Work <br>
closely with the development team to define requirements and create data <br>
entry tools that fit the needs of the data and end-users, and act as <br>
department liaison to the Common Alumni Affairs Development System (CAADS) <br>
group. Identify <br>
workflow issues and propose solutions, draft and maintain documentation <br>
and procedures for reporting and data flows. Develop <br>
and enhance systems for event and activity registration and management. Provide training and documents to guide the <br>
departmental users of new IT systems. Contribute <br>
to setting of standards for database objects and ensure conformance to <br>
these standards. Provide <br>
statistical support and analysis while advising staff on proper data <br>
usage. Work <br>
closely with key members of technical teams and product teams in the <br>
identification and documentation of technical requirements. Report <br>
to the Director of IT and develop and employ technologies that will <br>
improve and streamline business workflows. Provide <br>
creative, user-friendly tools for capture of data from direct observation, <br>
electronic databases, unstructured data, and other sources. Conduct basic <br>
descriptive statistical analysis (counts, means, standard distribution, <br>
correlation) on categorical and ordinal data. Analyze, <br>
evaluate, and synthesize complex and large datasets from various sources <br>
and produce highly readable, informative reports. Work <br>
within the existing structures and protocols and make recommendations as <br>
necessary. Develop <br>
solid working relationships with end-users, staff, management, consultants <br>
and vendors.</span></td>

<td valign="top"><span class="Fieldlabel">Basic Qualifications</span></td>
<td class="TGAlignLeft" width="80%"><span class="TEXT" id="Basic Qualifications">A B.A./B.S. in MIS, CS, business administration, or related field; <br>
minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a technical environment<br>
<br>
Knowledge and proven ability to work with various technology stacks <br>
needed: Windows, Oracle, LAMP, .NET, SQL <br>
(MS SQL Server and/or MySQL), Excel, Filemaker Pro and MS Access.<br>
<br>
Experience with database reporting, querying, structures and design <br>
required.<br>
<br>
Working knowledge of relational database technology, preferably, <br>
experience moving data from one database and front end to another with focus on <br>
data quality control. </span></td>

management; strong verbal and written technical and business communication <br>
skills; ability to analyze data through SQL queries; business analysis <br>
experience with custom, web-based business applications; awareness of <br>
enterprise system technologies and interface techniques; experience eliciting <br>
and documenting requirements, with minimal direction, that result in quality <br>
deliverables; ability to apply structure to complex, loosely defined problems; <br>
and knowledge of the system development life cycle; superior <br>
interpersonal skills; accuracy; flexibility; a history of demonstrating tact <br>
and diplomacy in communications with a wide variety of constituents .<br>

Ideal candidates have ability to <br>
understand, distill and convert the hopes and needs of complex projects into a solutions. <br>
Demonstrated ability/experience with information architecture. Capacity and <br>
desire to experiment with web technologies, and deploy them effectively. <br>
Oriented towards customer service; sets and manages priorities with minimal <br>
supervision; adept at working with both non-technical and technical people. <br>
Experience is ideal, but enthusiasm and eagerness to learn are equally <br>
important.<br>
