[UAPA] Election Day Holiday Survey + Financial Aid for Travel Update

Also, UAPA successfully advocated for an increase in financial aid by getting SFS to update their travel assumptions :)


Hi everyone,

We hope everyone is doing well as we approach midterm season! Last semester, UA Public Affairs reached out to you all to help us address the issue of increasingly high costs for winter travel. The clarity you all provided on undergraduate students’ end-of-semester travel plans and related financial impacts helped the UAPA successfully advocate for an increase in the financial aid (via the travel expense assumption) for the 2023-2024 academic year! Thank you to everyone who filled out our previous survey— this wouldn’t have been possible without you. 

This is a clear example that organizing students around specific issues can achieve real change.

That’s why today we are asking for your help again to tackle another important issue: An Election Day Holiday. For many years, MIT undergraduates have tried to get MIT to establish Election Day as an MIT Holiday, but we are now closer than ever to actually getting it done. Through extensive research and discussion with (many, many) stakeholder groups, we believe that we have found a promising option— starting the semester one day early in exchange for Election Day to be a holiday. If we act now, we believe that an Election Day Holiday can be implemented before the 2024 presidential election.
