Tl;dr, Fill out this form <https://us16.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FAfKYrFTc9Lg4huis8&xid=58e5f11ce3&uid=81007902&iid=807125ac30&pool=cts&v=2&c=1678906404&h=cbc11d014a923d749b4303fe19638bdb13329e09c24f74944b26b0a156332be5> to indicate which policy topics (including financial aid, primary and secondary education, student health care, and more!) UAPA should prioritize when advocating governmental bodies for policy changes relevant to undergrads. Attend the UAPA Open Meeting on Sunday 3/19, 2-4 pm @ 2-142 to participate in our advocacy efforts!
Dear Undergrads,
Recognizing that many issues impacting undergrads extend beyond the MIT campus, the UA Committee on Public Affairs (UAPA) is organizing to advocate for policy changes at a broader level (e.g., the state and federal government). In particular, we anticipate coordinating with other universities’ student governments, such as through the Boston Intercollegiate Government (BIG) <https://us16.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bigstugovt.com%2F&xid=58e5f11ce3&uid=81007902&iid=807125ac30&pool=cts&v=2&c=1678906404&h=bd43f999de4c18edac56449a2e3a7c108d815965c5cf2924eb23f907af08dc30>, to meet with policymakers to share our views (which are currently absent in many policy discussions!). We hope to partner with the MIT Graduate Student Council <https://us16.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgsc.mit.edu%2F&xid=58e5f11ce3&uid=81007902&iid=807125ac30&pool=cts&v=2&c=1678906404&h=cb6b29ef031c10162f0cd16eb368ca785abca11e49b2e14f6239cbf55fedbd94> and MIT administration when interests are aligned with those of undergrads. We acknowledge that there are a gamut of policies that touch students, so we seek to increase the effectiveness of our advocacy by restricting our scope to only discussions where (1) it is most productive to involve ourselves ("Would us pushing for this policy mean the difference between it passing or not?"), and (2) it is most relevant for current and prospective undergraduates ( "Are students the primary stakeholders in this policy discussion?") both at MIT and across the country.
We ask that you please fill out this form <https://us16.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FAfKYrFTc9Lg4huis8&xid=58e5f11ce3&uid=81007902&iid=807125ac30&pool=cts&v=2&c=1678906404&h=cbc11d014a923d749b4303fe19638bdb13329e09c24f74944b26b0a156332be5> to indicate which issues you feel are most pressing for students – not just for those at MIT, but for undergraduates as a whole. UAPA will use this information to prioritize and then support legislation and policies that best serve the stated interests of MIT undergrads.
Additionally, there are opportunities to learn about the UAPA and support our efforts! We will be holding an OPEN MEETING to all undergrads, this Sunday, March 19 from 2-4 pm in 2-142. All undergraduates are welcome to join to see how UAPA functions and to voice their opinions in our advocacy efforts.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us at ua-publicaffairs-chairs at mit.edu <mailto:ua-publicaffairs-chairs at mit.edu>!
Best,
Paul Irvine and Kimberly Liao
Co-chairs of UAPA
