Hello Undergraduates,

Hope you had fun this weekend with all the pre-frosh and are looking
forward to a long weekend to relax!

----

*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair, Alexander
Sludds (ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the
ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):

When William Bosworth designed the Main Group he had a strong focus
on greco-roman architecture. As part of this vision he incorporated a large
quantity of columns within the design. An interesting fact about the
columns outside of lobby 10 is that the middle columns are further from the
building than the edge columns by several inches. The columns are also
slightly thicker at the base. Columns in the center have a wider gap
between them. All of these "imperfections" in the symmetry of the column
actually result from imperfections in our own vision so that architecture
looks symmetrical to us. If anyone is interested the original copy of the
building plans for build 10 are in on display in the MIT museum right now,
but they are under their original name of building 17.
