I think that Australians prefer instrumental more so
too....................
A sweeping statement. At Milonga Para Los Niños on 31 July
(Brisbane), excluding 3 brackets from Cuarteto amenabar, I played 31
instrumental and 25 with vocal, across Tango, vals and milonga.
Still getting compliments after 3 weeks.

We have a similar experience at our monthly outdoor milonga (where the
music quality is governed by a Bose portable). The milonga has a good
reputation, numbers are strong and retention over a night is
satisfactory, even on cool nights.
So far in this thread, nobody has distinguished between Tango cancion
and Tango with vocal, where the vocalist sings the "bridge" and
typically the song starts with up to 1 minute of instrumental. I can
not think of an instance that I would play tango cancion for general
dancing. Personally, I find milongas without a balance of inst /
vocal boring. I can't imagine a milonga without Podesta, Vargas,
Ledesma, Campos, Castillo, Rufino, Duran..........
