Integrating Perspectives on the Natural Microbial World :
 From Nano-systems to Ecosystems

Microbial species and processes are remarkably diverse, complex, and
pervasive. A significant challenge for understanding ecosystem processes
involves the identification, quantification and modeling of microbial
interactions and dynamics, and the biogeochemical processes they mediate.
Just as individual macromolecules can serve as documents of evolutionary
history, the collective genomes within natural ecosystems can provide deep
perspective on environmental, evolutionary and ecological processes and
interactions. Recent results demonstrate that defining microbial functional
attributes, population biology, biological interactions, and ecosystem
processes in complex ecosystems is now possible, using such
genomics-enabled approaches.
