For our travel expense system, we have a function module that goes all
the way up the Org Chart to find someone. If no one can be found (in
the case of the top guy submitting a trip report) or if someone is not
connected to the Org chart correctly, it goes to the A/P manager. The
A/P manager then gets with HR to get the Org Chart fixed (in the case of
an error), or she has been given permission from the top guy to approve
his expenses.

Hi Andy,
It's probably a bit late for your project, but a neat solution is to use
a FM based rule that calls the SAP standard rule, catches any exceptions
and provides alternate results if the original rule failed.
Cheers,
Mike

We use rule AC00000168 to find a Chief to Approve expenses, so when the
'top chief' (the big chief), submits expenses the wf goes into error as
he does not have a chief! Anyone got a novel/innovative solution for
this?
Andy
