Read receipt for e-mails sent from a workflow

Hello group,

I have a requirement where an e-mail is sent to a customer (external
e-mail address) and the client needs to know if the customer has read
the e-mail. Just like in MS Outlook when you receive the read receipt
showing that the person has read their mail.

I have had a look and don't see a way of doing this but would like to
know if anyone has managed this in the past?

We're on release 700.
