Sending mails to outlook from workflow messages

Hi workflow gurus,

have created a workflow with some notifications that should be sent to the e-mail system. I know SAPCONNECT as a standard way to send notifications as e-mails. 

However my customer mentions a functionality of SENDMAIL?

Does anybody have a clue what this is and where this is configured?
