"Properties" in practice

Dear WUG's.

We had upgrade to 4.7. And I find out some new things. I suppose, it news only for me.
I'm interesting in properties page on step data and propeties in vesion-specific basic data for model, that seems equal.
I'll be very happy and will say "Big thanks", if someone explaine the meaning and aim of this "Properties" with example from his practice. 
I'll be very plesured with direct links to SAP market place, where I can read about it.
