Hi,
 
EDI is meant for electronic exchange of structured data between different applications/systems. Maybe this offers a solution, using Idocs as the standard interface for data exchange through EDI (also ALE (Application Link Enabling) is a concept that enables data exchange between applications/systems, combined with
Idoc processing). Hope this information helps you a bit. There are several info sources that describe these concepts and the use of it.
