Send mail to role?

Hi all.
 
I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if I ask questions that's been answered
before.
 
I want to add a step in a workflow which will resolve a role (i.e. determine
the agent) and then save the agent in a container.
 
This will allow me send a mail to the agent.
 
Is there any other smart way to send a mail to a role/agent.
