Background Work Item Status

Hello,
 
I have a background task that is executing a method to send an IDoc out.
Occasionally, the background work item will not process completely although
the method is executed successfully and the IDoc is sent out.  The status of
the background work item stays in "In Process" state.  I would appreciate
any thoughts on why this could be happening.
