If you require a two-step approval, and there is only an "last updated by" field
in the business object table, what do you do if someone asks you to find out who
approved a suspicious item? It probably isn't a good solution to not store
information about who approved with the business object, but I assume a scenario
like this could be in production one place or another.

Other than that I agree. When asked about what information would be lost (to
decide whether we would archive to tape or to the big archive) I likened it to
notes that are scribbled on envelopes when things go around via mail. This is in
our case valid for attachments which the user's create ad-hoc, to explain to the
receiver what they have done or what they want the receiver to do. And then I
asked the "ultimate" question: Did and do we archive envelopes for internal mail
in the case of paper-based things?

I am with you Diane.
I am running deletion job in production everyday, since we don't need that
data.
I do not want to bother with creating files and then deleting them.

It's just general SAP's recommendation to archive.

Please answer that question for me. If I do not need this data, why should
I archive?? Even in Production!!

The workitem and history deletion reports: RSWWWIDE and RSWWHIDE
(transaction
SWUL) will delete container instances for selected workitems. You should
however
Archive and delete (transaction SARA), if possible.
