Customer-specific enhancements to the WIS

Fellow workflowers,
 
I have a question relating to the performance of the WIS after customising
it.
 
We are wanting to use the WIS to provide as much of our workflow reporting
needs as possible.  Our users would like to be able to report and drill down
on data which is summarised by fields not contained in the standard
communication structure MCWF_TRANS.  I have read and understood the relevant
documentation on how to do this in the SAP Library.
 
Over time we would probably be adding many fields that are specific to this
or that workflow but not generic to all of our workflows.  I understand that
we can limit the code executed in function exit EXIT_SAPLMCWF_001 by testing
the task id in XMCWF_TRANS-WI_RH_TASK to ensure that we only execute
customer/workflow specific code for the workflows that we need enhanced
reporting.
 
My question what are the performance implications of extending structure
MCWF_TRANS for various different workflows?  Can I allow customising of this
structure in many different cases for many different workflows and be sure
that we are not penalising the performance for other non-interested WIS
users?
 
An additional question:  is there any way through an ehancement to provide
drill-down through WIS to the actual work item object (e.g. Network,
Employee etc?)
