for what it is worth:

we've seen this problem. regularly.
every since OS X 10.5 (i think)... in any case, ever
since apple included 'screen sharing'
in the standard OS build.

it seems as though the 'screen sharing' piece on client computer
and ARD console expecting this function from ARD on client computer, confuses ARD.

our temporary solution has been simply to delete the client form 
ARD console, and add again.

ARD definitely needs a little more TLC.
(we also have issues getting reports generated.
most of the time one can wait an eternity for....
nothing.)
