[Macpartners] Command-prompt-only window vs GUI?

Hello to all:

I recently saw an OS X user with a Darwin-only command screen which did
not at all appear to be a terminal or X11 session.   I then saw them press
some hotkeys and the screen rotated to the regular GUI we all know, with
the Apple appearing in the upper left corner.

My question is now they did it, and how I can do it?   I am running
10.3.5.
