I actually don't use iPhoto by default. I either set Image Capture to
automatically open and download my photos to a specific folder I set,
where I sort the photos manually, then import them to iPhoto if I
want to make an easy web page or something. Or I don't have anything
automatically open; I just copy the photos from the memory card in a
reader or in the camera into my chosen destinations.
The prefs for this are in the Image Capture application Preferences.
You can choose Image Capture or iPhoto to automatically open there.
