compositional talent to MIT this spring as composer-in-residence from March
12-17. Sharifi's residency includes the world premiere of Awakening,and a
panel that recognizes the Arab Spring.

Jamshied Sharifi presents the world premiere ofAwakening, commissioned by
and for the MIT Wind Ensemble. The work is an extended composition that
recognizes the Arab Spring and uses Arabic *maqam*, the system of modes or
scales in classical Arabic music, as source material.

Join Jamshied Sharifi, MIT Ford International Professor of History and
Associate Provost Philip Khoury, as well as Obaidah Abuhashem '12,
president of the MIT Arab Students’ Association, and members of the MIT
Wind Ensemble for a panel about the events of the Arab Spring, a
revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests.

About Jamshied Sharifi
Jamshied Sharifi’s remarkable professional career as a composer and
keyboardist, producer and arranger, has included scores for motion
pictures, his own world music ensemble, collaboration with artists such as
Ray Charles, and arrangements for the Inauguration of President Obama. Sharifi
is an MIT and Berklee College of Music alumnus.
