Forum: "Forgiveness & Healing: Stories of Moral Courage from Lebanon" - April 20, 2005. Reception - 6:00 p.m. Forum and Question and Answer session - 6:30 pm. Location - The Capitol, Room HC-5. (Enter the Capitol from the south (Independence Ave.) door. Have a photo ID with you.

Join us for an evening of personal stories from four Lebanese, brought together in the work of Initiatives of Change by a common courage & call - from the pain of the Lebanese civil war, to seek a way to peace:

a.. Mr. Assaad Chaftari (top left), who during Lebanon's civil war was second in command of the "Lebanese Forces," a Christian militia. In 2000 Chaftari made an unprecedented public apology by a senior former combatant to those who suffered during the war, becoming a strong voice for reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.

b.. Mr. Muhieddine Mustapha Chehab (top right), an elected Mukhtar (city official) from the business district of Ras Beirut, was a commander in a Sunni Muslim militia. After the war ended he openly acknowledged past wrongs and reached out to former enemies.

c.. Mr. Ramez Georges Salame (bottom left), a lawyer who, during the war, laid down his gun and sought links to other community factions, building a network that allowed a dynamic of dialogue and reconciliation to form.

d.. Mrs. Roweida Saleh (bottom right), a Druze from the Chouf Mountains, a fault line region during the civil war. An instructor at a Lebanese business and technical school, Saleh is a leader of the next generation of Lebanese working for healing and reconciliation.
