<LI><FONT size=2><B style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify">Mr. Assaad Chaftari</B> (top
left), who during Lebanon’s civil war was second in command of the “Lebanese
Forces,” a Christian militia. In 2000 Chaftari made an unprecedented
public apology by a senior former combatant to those who suffered during the
war, becoming a strong voice for reconciliation between Christians and
Muslims.<BR></FONT>
<LI><FONT size=2><B style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify">Mr. Muhieddine Mustapha
Chehab</B> (top right), an elected Mukhtar (city official) from the business
district of Ras Beirut, was a commander in a Sunni Muslim militia. After the
war ended he openly acknowledged past wrongs and reached out to former
enemies.<BR></FONT>
<LI><FONT size=2><B style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify">Mr. Ramez Georges Salame
</B>(bottom left), a lawyer who, during the war, laid down his gun and sought
links to other community factions, building a network that allowed a dynamic
of dialogue and reconciliation to form.<BR></FONT>
<LI><FONT size=2><B style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify">Mrs. Roweida Saleh</B> (bottom
right), a Druze from the Chouf Mountains, a fault line region during the civil
war. An instructor at a Lebanese business and technical school, Saleh is
a leader of the next generation of Lebanese working for healing and
reconciliation. </FONT></LI></UL>
