The University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks applications for the position of Department Chair and professor of Engineering and Society. The Chair will be expected to advance the quality of the Engineering and Society Department’s research and educational programs. The Chair, through effective leadership, is responsible for guiding the Department’s vision and building consensus among the Department’s faculty and staff. The Chair will assist in recruiting, developing, and supporting faculty. Demonstrable management, administrative, and outreach experience are required, as well as a track record of excellent research and teaching.
The Department seeks a leader whose research and teaching interests align with the one or more of the following areas:
o engineering ethics and values,
o knowledge integration (i.e., interdisciplinarity across science and engineering and the humanities and social sciences); and
o sociotechnical design and innovation practices.
A candidate with a research portfolio that contributes to the theories and practice of social justice, sustainability, and / or data ethics is preferred, especially insofar as their analysis pertains to engineering. In this way, the Chair will enhance and raise to prominence the diverse research activities of the faculty.
To confront the challenges of the 21st century, UVA Engineering graduates must possess both high-level analytical skills and the ability to apply those skills ethically in ways that reflect the cultural, economic, and political context. The Department of Engineering and Society is where UVA Engineering students learn to integrate analysis and judgment so they can create innovative solutions that are effective and sustainable. The Department contains two educational programs: (1) Science, Technology, and Society (STS), and (2) Entrepreneurship and Business with a combined 17 full-time faculty and 4 adjunct faculty.
The Department is an integral and invaluable component of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. UVA Engineering’s mission is to “make the world a better place by creating and disseminating knowledge and by preparing engineering leaders to solve global challenges.” The vision is to “be a leader among engineering schools in seizing opportunities to benefit humanity through bold research and world-class education.” The Department of Engineering and Society aligns perfectly with the UVA Engineering’s mission and vision and is critical to their achievement. The Department seeks a Chair with the following characteristics:
o A recognized leader in the professional field of STS and / or engineering ethics.
o A research portfolio that demonstrates an ability to conduct interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research.
o Experience in curriculum development and pedagogy at the intersection of STS, ethics, and engineering.
o An understanding of the accreditation requirements for engineering education and the importance of engineering ethics and social science therein.
o A persuasive and effective advocate for the Department and its programs.
o Someone who will promote and demonstrate collegiality, diversity, inclusion, and teamwork as core values within the department.
o Someone who will embrace, represent, mentor, and support career development of all members of the department.
o A strong leader who works well with others, engages easily with others, and possesses excellent communication skills.
o An effective and equitable administrator who can manage all aspects of the Department’s operations.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Science, Technology, and Society or a related field and hold an associate or “full” professor position. Additionally, preference will be given to candidates with a track record of securing funding, effective leadership of interdisciplinary groups, and demonstrated commitment to diversity and respect for others.
