Hi everyone!

Please enjoy the latest edition of the GSC DEI newsletter and have a great weekend! This Monday is Indigenous People’s Day! We invite you to learn more about the holiday’s significance by attending an October 14 lecture<http://inj9.mjt.lu/lnk/AU0AAA7fRFMAAcrlBzYAAACNp_IAAAAAGqoAJOwaAAiQzwBfbj6KFrD9UPLUSJmEq-lhHJwFQwAIIWc/3/OAUv0aTnlhjvZyPdnAQlTg/aHR0cHM6Ly9kaXZlcnNpdHkubWl0LmVkdS9ldmVudHMvMjAyMC9tbGstdmlzaXRpbmctc2Nob2xhci12aXJ0dWFsLWx1bmNoZW9uLXBhdHJpY2lhLXNhdWxpcw> by MLK Visiting Scholar Patricia Saulis. Check out the attached document for MIT’s Indigenous People’s Day schedule of events.

General GSC DEI

We would like to introduce and give a warm welcome to the newest member of our team, Kebbie Ghaderi, who will serve as our Event Coordinator!

RISE

This week we released another op-ed for our RISE campaign in which we call on MIT to stop telling URMs to wait for change<https://thetech.com/2020/10/08/dei-cant-wait> and instead take immediate action at the school- and department-level to begin to mitigate the harm that marginalized people at MIT have been experiencing for decades. Make sure to check it out and share with your friends and colleagues!

Department and Classroom Inclusion

At the Conduit meeting on Thursday we kicked off by hearing people’s thoughts on “what would you do differently as a faculty member?”, which then transitioned into a discussion on common supports for and against diversity statements in hiring. We also talked about what fostering an inclusive culture looks like in supporting community members with intersectional identities.

Other MIT Opportunities

Celebrate the end of Latinx Heritage Month and join LGSA for their first Noche de Cocinar making Venezuelan arepas! The event will be October 18 from 5-7:30pm. Contact lgsa-exec at mit.edu<mailto:lgsa-exec at mit.edu> to register and receive the zoom link. First 40 RSVPs will be reimbursed for food or ingredients.

This year the Office of Graduate Education sculpted a new grants program, Grad Student Experience Grants Program, to include more facets of the graduate student experience including supporting students with children, diversity, equity, & inclusion, professional & leadership development, healthy living, arts and civic engagement, community-building across disciplines, outreach, advisor - advisee relations, and more!
