Becky:
If you're going to be shooting for print as well as Web, I second/
third the recommendations for the Nikons. I've used Nikon cameras
since the 70s when I was teaching photography (not digital, of
course). I have a D70 I bought when they first came out and will
probably upgrade to a D3 soon. For your purposes, a D40X would be more
than enough - for quality print you want somewhere between 7-8mp.,
although I've had superb results with the D70 which is only a little
more than 6. However, Canon makes some equally good cameras - an
important test is for the person who will use the camera to obtain one
that he/she also finds comfortable. Cameras are like shoes -- never
buy without seeing how it fits. I suggest the buyer take a walk (or
the Galleria bus) to Calumet Photographic on Bent Street (across from
the Galleria) and try some different cameras. Calumet generally caters
to professional photographers but they are excellent in the consumer
and prosumer trade, too and are great folks. (Some will remember a
presentation on digital photography they did for the School of
Engineering Communicators a few years ago.) They do a lot of business
with MIT.
Best,
Bill
