Tom probably bought the Nikon D40x (10.2 megapixel). The kit includes a
somewhat worthless AF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.5 lens. Unfortunately, the body can
only support AF-S (motor-integrated) lenses. For the price, the D80 is a
much better body.

The D40 (without the X) is an older camera that relies on a 6 megapixel
sensor.

If you'd like to play with some cameras, you're welcome to drop by The Tech
on the 4th floor of the student center. We have a wide variety of Nikon
cameras (D2Hs, D300, D80, etc.) and some spectacular lenses (like an AF-S DX
17-55 f 2.8, and an AF-S VR 70-200 f 2.8).
