Hi Damien,

You can follow the budget calculation document evaluating_budgets_in_eccov4r3.pdf by Christopher G. Piecuch
(https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/doc/evaluating_budgets_in_eccov4r3.pdf). All of the necessary variables can be found in https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/ as described in the document. Most of the variables are in the https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/nctiles_monthly/.

Two things to note here:
1) The ECCO ftp server has been replaced with ECCO Drive as announced to the ecco-support mailing list in early August. Please replace ftp://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov in URLs with https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files. ECCO Drive requires users to first register for a NASA’s Earthdata account at https://urs.earthdata.nasa.gov/users/new in order to access the ECCO products.
2) The interp_monthly directory, ftp://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/Version4/Release3/interp_monthly/ in your email (i.e. https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/interp_monthly for ECCO Drive) contains the interpolated fields on a regular grid. These interpolated fields cannot be used to compute budgets because of errors introduced in interpolation. One has to use the fields on the native grid (https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/nctiles_monthly/) for budget calculations.

Best,
Ou Wang

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [ecco-support] Heat Budget in ECCO

Dear Support team,

I am willing to compute heat budget using ECCOv4 (Release3) . I started to follow the nice tutorial (https://ecco-v4-python-tutorial.readthedocs.io/ecco_budgets.html). It starts with the open_mdsdataset function to load the data,

ds_ave = open_mdsdataset('/rigel/ocp/users/jt2796/ECCO_v4_r2/run_budg3d_1yr/',

                         delta_t=3600, ref_date='1991-12-15 12:0:0', geometry='llc',

                         prefix=['monave2d','monave3d'])

but I am not too sure what should be the actual files targeted under the given directory (format?). Should it contain all the variables such as in ftp://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/Version4/Release3/interp_monthly/ ? I have tried many options, but never seems to make it work. The error I get is "Couldn't find RC.meta file to infer nz.", so I am guessing it is grid-related...

Sorry if I am missing something here. Thank you for your help,

Damien
