[Dspace-general] Library catalog/repository overlap

There will be an overlap between catalogue and IR records; this can not be
prevented unless one is willing to compromise the subject access. Meaning
when you catalogue a theses for an example, you will include subject
headings using a controlled vocabulary, where as with IR, this is not
possible. Subject access is only through key words.

I think at the last year's ETD conference National Library of Canada made a
presentation on not including theses in the catalogue and saving that they
made by doing so. There were concerns raised at this presentation about
limiting the subject access points.

Suppressing the catalogue to give way for IR again will compromise the
subject access. I know more libraries include in their catalogue entry the
IR location of the item. So there is a link from the catalogue entry to the
full text item, when ever it is available.

Hope this is helpful

Subject: [Dspace-general] Library catalog/repository overlap

I'm curious as to how other institutions handle overlap between their
catalog and repository item records. The obvious collection example
is ETDs, though we have other local collections which also appear in
both our catalog and IR.

We have never included call numbers in our repository, but now that we
are changing our workflow to create catalog records directly from
repository records, some of our librarians want the inclusion of call
numbers (including for non-print items). Does anyone else do this?

Additionally, how do others plan to handle duplicate records via a
next gen library search interface such as VuFind? We have discussed
suppressing the catalog record in favor of the repository record
because it provides the full-text. In such a scenario, the call
number of the print item would not then be available.

Your thoughts?
