No good formal arguments exist for a central question in biology: "Why, in
species which have sexual reproduction, are there usually only 'males' and
'females'?" We present a nonlinear optimization model that supports the
conclusion that having at most two sexes maximizes long run viability. This
talk will introduce the classic Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions for
constrained optimization problems.

Prerequisites for the talk: multivariate calculus

Pizza after the talk.

This lecture series is intended for an advanced undergraduate or beginning
graduate student audience. The talks will begin in the late afternoon,
usually at 5:30pm. There will be pizza available after each talk.
*
6. MIT WGS - Trafficking Networks: Selling Sex Through Mobile Technology
(Tues. May 3, 7pm)
When:* Tuesday May 3, 7pm*
Where: *6-120*
*
Cell phones now play a central role in transactional sex
encounters, facilitating rapid communication between clients, pimps, and sex
workers in a geographically mobile context. In this panel discussion, we
will consider how technology is implicated in changing the dynamics of sex
work, and its contribution to human trafficking in the U.S. and globally.
Please join us!

Panelists:
-Mitali Thakor, a grad student in the HASTS (History, Anthropology, and
Science, Technology, & Society) program at MIT, whose research is on
intersections of technology and anthropology with a focus on varying forms
of mobility.
-Nikki Valila, Program Director of the ACT (Acknowledge, Commit, Transform)
Group Home at Germaine Lawrence, which exclusively serves girls who have
been, or are at risk for being commercially sexually exploited.

Light dinner starting @ 6:30PM.

7. Invitation to participate in study of the role of advising, mentors, and
networks in career development of engineering Ph.D. Students ($25 gift card)
*

*Dear MIT Engineering Graduate Student: *

We invite you to participate in a research study on the career development
and socialization of engineering Ph.D. students. *In particular, we would
like to speak with Ph.D. students who are at least in their third year of
doctoral study at MIT.* Participation entails a brief survey and a
one-on-one interview that will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and will
explore your experiences and perceptions as a doctoral student, with
specific emphasis on your career development and the ways in which social
networks with a variety of individuals have contributed to your career
development. The project’s findings will inform the development and
strengthening of career services for graduate students and contribute to the
literature on career development in doctoral education.

*As a token of our appreciation, you will be provided with a $25 gift card
for your participation. *

If you would like to be interviewed, the information you share will be kept
confidential and your name and other personally identifying information will
not be associated with your comments or perceptions. Also, please be assured
that participation in this study is completely voluntary and your decision
to participate or not participate will have no effect on your relationship
with MIT.

*If you would like to participate in this research study, please send an
email to STEMcareer at mit.edu to schedule an appointment in May or June*.

This study has been reviewed by MIT COUHES and has received support from
MIT’s Office of the Dean of Graduate Education.

Thank you for your consideration,

*Carrie Sampson Moore, Deborah Liverman, and Katalin Szelenyi*

Researchers from MIT and UMass Boston
*

* 9. [HGWISE] Unpacking Gender: Men and Women in Science, Technology, and
More (Tue, May 3, 4:30-6p)*
*When: *Tue, May 3, 4.30 - 6 pm*
Where: *Harvard, Geological Lecture Hall, University Museum*
Speaker: *Debbie Chachra, Olin College of Engineering
*
*Describe someone, friend or stranger. The very first thing you say reveals
whether they are a man or a woman. Gender affects how we perceive everyone
around us and how we express ourselves, often in ways we don't realize. Why
is technology dominated by men? Why are women so often caregivers? This
seminar will use ideas from psychology and education research to investigate
how we perceive and respond to gender. It will give you some tools to
understand how you think about gender, along with information that puts that
in greater social context. Please bring something to write on, something to
write with, and a willingness to engage your brain.

Reception to Follow

This event is sponsored by HGWISE, the GSC, HILS, FD&D, and SEAS*

*Debbie Chachra is an Associate Professor of Materials Science at the
Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, where she was one of the founding
faculty. Prof. Chachra's research interests are twofold. She researches the
engineering student experience, including persistence and migration,
differences by gender, and the role of self-efficacy in project-based
learning. As well as her work in education, she studies biological
materials, currently focusing on a polyester-silk composite synthesized by
bees. She also consults, facilitates workshops, and speaks widely on topics
including curricular design for engineering education, and on gender,
diversity and the engineering student experience.
