1. Join the GWAMIT Fall Leadership Conference Planning Committee
We are very excited to begin planning for our Fall Leadership
Conference! The goal of this conference will be to provide graduate
women with practical negotiation and leadership skills through
workshops and seminars. We envision 3-4 events over 2-3 days in early
November. We would love to hear your ideas or have you join us on the
planning committee. Please e-mail Clarissa at ccl at mit.edu to get
involved!
2. MAP Summer Mentor Informational Open House
When: Monday, July 12, 12 – 1 pm

The Mentor Advocate Partnership (MAP) program in the Office of
Minority Education is holding a Mentor Informational Open House for
all individuals potentially interested in being (or continuing to be)
a mentor for an incoming student. There are no strings attached!
Drinks and desserts will be available and we will be doing a brief
presentation on the program. All interested MIT staff, faculty, & PhD
candidates are more than welcome.

When: Wednesday, July 21, 3 – 5 pm
Where: Stata Center, 32-123
Academia, Industry, or Both? Are you considering an academic career,
an industry career, or trying to decide between academia and industry?
Come and hear experts who can help you learn more.

4. Purdue Conference for Pre-Tenure Women
When: September 23 & 24, 2010
Where: Purdue

Purdue University is pleased to announce our inaugural Conference for
Pre-Tenure Women. This conference is designed to enhance the success
of female faculty. The Purdue Conference is targeted to appeal to post-
doctoral and pre-tenure women. There will be specific breakout
sessions focused on underrepresented women in STEM, however most of
the sessions are designed to appeal to women from all disciplines. The
overall conference goal is to provide educational opportunities to
help women identify strategies to enhance their success for promotion
and tenure.
Conference begins on Thursday, September 23 with a half day session
facilitated by Campus Women Lead. Friday sessions are a combination of
plenary and breakout sessions, focusing on Quality of Life,
Practicalities of Work and Identity and Work issues.
Featured speakers will be:
- Mildred Garcia, president of California State University, Dominguez
Hills,
and author of "Succeeding in an Academic Career."
- Lesia Crumpton-Young, professor of industrial engineering and
management systems at the University of Central Florida. She is the
author of the You've Got the Power workbook series and the recipient
of the 2006 Women of Color Educational Leadership Award and the 1999
Educator of the Year Award from the National Society of Black Engineers.
- Gertrude Fraser, vice provost for Faculty Advancement at the
University of Virginia, and Kathleen Wong, assistant professor in the
School of Communication at Western Michigan University. They will lead
a workshop on Mobilizing Women's Inclusive Leadership Skills. Their
work is a part of the Association of American Colleges and
Universities Campus Women Lead program.
- Former Purdue trustee Susan Butler will lead a workshop based on her
first book, "Becoming the CEO of You."
A $150 registration fee is required to attend the conference. However,
attendees may apply for fellowships that will cover the cost of the
conference fee and a one-night stay at Purdue's Union Club Hotel.
Fellowships will be awarded to 20 applicants. The application deadline
is Aug. 1.
Registration for the event is open, and fellowship applications are
available online.
