Greetings,

Microsoft has announced the release of MS Office 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2). As of April 29, 2009, SP2 will show up as an important update in Windows Update Service on computers with MS Office 2007 suite installed. Machine that are configured to use MIT Windows Automatic Update Service will not see this update at this time.

MS Office 2007 SP2 has a number of important improvements, performance tweaks and new features. Most noticeable changes are :

- improved performance and responsiveness in Outlook 2007. To see full list of improvements in Outlook 2007 visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968774/
- added native support for saving file to PDF and XML
- added support for OpenDocument Format (ODF), which removes requirements to install plug-in and additional software for ODF
- introduction of the uninstall tool that removes only the service pack

Before installing this service pack, you are strongly encouraged to read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953195 which describes all improvements, new features, and a list of know issues in MS Office 2007 SP2.

MS Office 2007 SP2 is also available for download<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B444BF18-79EA-46C6-8A81-9DB49B4AB6E5&displaylang=en> < http://www.microsoft.com/downloads> (290 MB) from Microsoft's Download Center.

There is no blocker tool to prevent installation of SP2 via Windows Update Service. If you want to wait with SP2 installation you can do so by subscribing to the MIT Windows Automatic Update Service (WAUS) at http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/windows/updates/. Once SP2 becomes an approved MIT WAUS update it will be automatically installed on your machine.

If a problem develops after SP2 is installed, you have an option to uninstall SP2 and roll back to Office 2007 SP1. SP2 introduces a service pack uninstall tool that removes only the service pack. If you experience a problem after installing the update, this tool can be used to roll back to Office 2007 SP1.
