Good afternoon,
Information Services and Technology (IS&T) is pleased to announce the
release and support for Cisco VPN client 4.8 for Windows Vista early
adopters and for Windows XP users. IS&T recommends that users "Wait" to
upgrade to Windows Vista due to the many products important or critical to
productive and safe computing at MIT, that do not work yet.
Who should install
-------------------
Cisco VPN client 4.8 is fully compatible with Vista Enterprise and is needed
to activate off-campus Vista machines. We encourage off-campus early
adopters of Windows Vista to install Cisco VPN client 4.8 as soon as
possible since there is a 30 day window for activation of Vista after
initial installation. If Vista users are not connected directly to MITnet or
use VPN connection and their machine becomes inactivated after the 30-day
grace period, the only option is to reinstall the OS. Also, off-campus users
of some services restricted to MIT usage, such as the Student Matlab
Service, need the VPN installed in order to access those services.
The current version of Cisco VPN client 4.6 will continue to work under
Windows XP and there is no rush to upgrade to the new version 4.8 at this
time.
Known issues
-------------
Cisco VPN 4.8 will uninstall the current version of Cisco VPN client 4.6.
Users should be aware that they would have to run the installer twice or
uninstall version 4.6 prior to installing 4.8. Also, uninstalling the
current version 4.6 involves rebooting the system at least once, in some
cases it requires two reboots. During Installation of DNE (Deterministic
Network Enhancer) it could take some additional time based on system
hardware. Users should not attempt to abort the installation process.
