VirusScan 8.5 Release Effort Underway

Good Afternoon,

Information Services & Technology (IS&T) has initiated an effort to prepare
for the release of VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i (Windows) and VirusScan 8.5
(formerly Virex) for Macintosh to the MIT community. IS&T has been
evaluating earlier beta versions over the past several months and is now
partnering with community members in further testing of VirusScan Enterprise
8.5i functionality since McAfee announced their intention to release
VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i later this fall.

VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i will be the latest version of McAfee antivirus
software for Windows and VirusScan 8.5 for Mac OS X platform. VirusScan
Enterprise 8.5i will include support for Windows XP and Vista. VirusScan
8.5(Mac) will include support for OS X and Intel based Macs. Currently, IS&T
is testing a Beta 3 Refresh version of the Windows software and the Release
Candidate of the Mac version and expects to release the final version
shortly after the vendor releases it to market later this fall.

New Features and Improvements to VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i for Windows

include:

- Incremental engine component updates

- Ability to use different sets of detection definition (DAT) files at the
same time

- Support for scanning of 64-bit platforms

- Detection of rootkits in memory; the on-demand scanner can be configured
to scan system memory for installed rootkits

- Enhanced Access Protection: This feature prevents unwanted changes by
restricting access to specified ports, files and folders, shares, registry
keys and values.

- The rules have been enhanced to expand exclusion capability and provide
better protection

- Support for Vista

- Support for Windows XP 64-bit

New Features and Improvements to VirusScan 8.5 for Mac include:

- Universal Binary: VirusScan for Mac 8.5 beta is the first universal binary
version in the Virex product line. VirusScan for Mac will run on both Intel-
and PowerPC-based Mac computers natively.

- On Access scanning: VirusScan for Mac 8.5 beta features True On Access
Scanning. It scans every file being accessed from or written to the machine
and blocks infections, if any. On Access Scanner can be configured to scan
on Read Only, Write Only or both. It can also be configured to scan files on
network volumes.

- 5100 engine support: Support for the latest McAfee Anti-Virus engine

- Apple Mail scanning: VirusScan for Mac 8.5 beta scans Apple Mail messages
for any infections. This feature is available through both On Demand Scanner
and On Access Scanner.
