Subject: Eudora 6.2.1 Release Effort Underway Announcement

Good Afternoon,

IS&T is pleased to announce that the release effort for Eudora 6.2.1 for Windows and Macintosh has begun. Eudora 6.2.1 is the latest version of Qualcomm's e-mail client and is available to MIT community members through a site license. 

This release effort will focus on Eudora's IMAP functionality and identifying and documenting issues relevant to the migration to IMAP in the MIT computing environment. Starting with this release, the Eudora installer will default to the IMAP protocol with an option for users to opt out and use the POP3 protocol. More information about IMAP and its advantages over POP3 will be communicated as we proceed with this released.

The change in installer behavior aligns with MIT IS&T's initiative to promote IMAP as the primary mail protocol. Other communications and training addressing the underlying reasons for this initiative and how it can benefit users will be forthcoming.

In addition to a number of bug fixes and IMAP functionality enhancements, this version also includes a fix for a security vulnerability present in all previous versions of Eudora for Windows. This security vulnerability does not affect Macintosh machines. The details of this security vulnerability are scheduled to be disclosed on May 2, 2005. IS&T is working hard to ensure that version 6.2.1 is available much earlier.
