Subject: [abcd-www] Oct 12 Meeting: Building Accessible Websites
Our October meeting will center on making our sites more accessible.
Mat Marquis, who discussed HTML5 at our May meeting, is coming back
for more punishment at our hands. Mat will demonstrate how he
increases accessibility by building on a foundation of semantically
meaningful markup enhanced with WAI-ARIA attributes and meaningful
descriptive text. He'll discuss some of the more common assistive
technologies used to access the web, and ways we can tailor our sites
to make them more usable for those contexts without compromising the
integrity of the design. He'll also cover how these enhancements stand
to benefit all users by making a site more search engine friendly and
providing us with a solid starting point for creating rich browsing
experiences through progressive enhancement.
Mat "Wilto" Marquis is a freelance designer and developer based out of
Somerville currently contracted full-time by Filament Group, a
Boston-based design studio. Mat specializes in building
highly-accessible websites that adapt to the many contexts in which
people use the web. Mat's most recent project was the responsive
BostonGlobe.com site, and he is a contributing member of the jQuery
Mobile team.
