[WebPub] QR Codes on Campus

Hi Allan,

I heard from Justin today that you’re working on mobile tours for the Museum. I’d like to learn more about that from you.

Justin and his team at IS&T are developing a campus tour for MIT150 that will be incorporated into the existing MIT apps for iPhone and (soon) Droid. The tour will remain part of the apps after MIT150 ends.

The scope of this project is to take the self-guided tour map that's distributed at the MIT Information Center and turn it into a location-aware mobile application. We plan to have QR codes so that users who are set up to use them can take a picture of a code and be directed to mobile web content about 1) the location itself and 2) events taking place at that location. As I understand it, the mobile team at IS&T will be able to change the URL(s) associated with each code, so that they can be re-purposed at will.

We are still in the discovery phase regarding QR codes, and I’m as anxious as anyone to learn more about them. Perhaps this is a good topic for a WebPub meeting? I’d love to hear from someone who’s an expert but not a vendor. Does anyone on WebPub know such a person?

I'd also like to keep in the loop about any "official" QR codes. I just talked to Justin Anderson about the MIT mobile app tours and heard that there might be QR codes. One big question would be how different groups could rely on the same codes since each would contain a single URL. Also, would these be maintained beyond 2011?

Hi Lars,

We’re planning to incorporate QR codes into signage for the MIT150 Open House. We’re still in the planning stages, but I’d be happy to talk with you about them.

Hey folks,

Anyone have experience with using QR codes on campus and care to offer any insights? Trying to figure out whether its worth it eg for getting events into people’s calendars via smartphone etc...

And if so, anything better than Google Charts for generating?

Cheers,

lars
