[WebPub] Drupal and .htaccess

We are in the process of designing the new DUE website which will be
implemented on Drupal. Currently, a subsection of our site has restricted
access which is controlled by a .htaccess.mit file in that directory. In the
.htacces file, we include "<limit GET> require group" and the list of Athena
groups that have access. So, in moving to Drupal, we can limit access
through roles. However, someone must have an account in order to be assigned
a role. Not all the people who are part of the Athena groups that need
access to this part of our site will have accounts on our system. I am not
talking about a small number of people, otherwise I would just add them.
I am wondering if anyone has implemented something in Drupal that uses
Athena groups to authenticate users. We will be using certificates to
authenticate users so we will have their Kerberos IDs. If a person does
not have a account on our system, I would like the system to use the
Kerberos ID to check the Athena groups that have been designated for the
page (or something like this).
Does anyone have an insight/code to share?
Thanks!
Anna
