The Department of Performing Arts seeks to fill a full-time, term faculty position to teach undergraduate courses in Scene Painting for the 2014-15 academic year. This position is a one-year, non-tenure track, term appointment beginning on August 15, 2014, going through May 15, 2015, including intersession and spring break.

Qualified applicants must have experience and skills in scenic art, an MFA or equivalent professional experience.
Responsibilities and Characteristic Duties are as follows:

  1.  Teach up to 6 credits per semester in Stagecraft-Scene Painting (TH146).
  2.  Advise and instruct students involved in co-curricular theatre, film, and video production work (as charge painters, scenic artists, props artisans and scenery technicians) in scene painting techniques, requiring:
*         Ability to engage in creative collaboration with student, faculty and professional guest artist designers.
*         Proficiency in large-scale representational backdrop and show curtain scene painting.
*         Proficiency in the painting of trompe l'oeil and faux surfaces and textures for stage and screen.
*         Ability to evaluate and introduce new painting products, tools and equipment as appropriate.
*         Proficiency in scenic (foam) sculpting techniques.

  1.  Manage day-to-day operations in the paint shop.
*         Train and supervise student employees.
*         Manage workflow on multiple, simultaneous projects.
*         Recommend over-hire as needed and appropriate.
*         Maintain tools and equipment.
*         Oversee paint shop supplies budget.
*         Monitor paint stock inventory.  Account for inventory used per project.
*         Ensure compliance with applicable health and safety policies, codes, and regulations, including Hazard Communication, hazardous waste management, and Boston Fire Regulations.

  1.  Participate in planning and execution of Emerson Stage productions and select VMA film and television productions.

     *   Serve as Production Charge Painter as needed.  Act as lead painter on specific jobs, especially those requiring advanced skills or techniques.
     *   Assist Production Technical Director(s) in preparation of time and material estimates.
     *   Coordinate crew for touch-up and strike paint calls in theaters.

  1.  Advise and consult on scenic painting materials, processes and techniques with other departments in the College, including VMA and OA.

     *   Advise, instruct and monitor students working on select film, television or extra-curricular projects that may be scheduled in the Scenic Studio.
