Hi Chase;

Have you considered a musical show for audio assignment exersizes?

I was a high school drama coach in March 1985, we did the musical "The Boyfriend".

There are many in-scene music cues which need to be co-ordinated with the on stage action, orchestra, choreography, and tech.

Hope this idea is helpful.

I love The Glass Menagerie for Sound assignments. There are two sounds the script calls for that I think are particularly â propos. The first is where Williams indicates the use of music during Tom’s first speech right before he says “The play is memory.” The second one isf the sound at the end of the first scene where Williams provides readers with the stage direction: “MUSIC: ‘THE GLASS MENAGERIE’ UNDER FAINTLY,” also used at the very end of the scene.

As I find myself ramping up for yet teaching yet another class in sound
design, I wonder if perhaps some of you have a particularly good script
from which to assign class projects.

I've been using Rose Tattoo, Streetcar, and Our Town.

I would love to try something new.

Any ideas?

Chase

Chase,
We just did Woman in Black. It was an intersting project for all of our designers, but I was suprised by the inttricasy of the sound design. 2 acts 3 actors, mulitple settings including a theater during rehearsal, a sea side, a nursery. There is a storm, ghostly breezes, footsteps and a dog. (heard not seen)

Actually when I think about it, it might be too much for a green designer, but our student stepped up and had a ball, with good results. They were excited about the project, and did a very well attended Midnight Show.

I don't know any of the ins and outs of sound, but this was a popular choice and was well received.

Please take a look at it,

Best
Carla Richters

I used a relatively new play for my intro to design class - we covered
all aspects - the play is Neighborhood 3:Requisition of Doom by Jennifer
Haley (the play was part of the 06 or 07 Humana Festival).

there isn't much in the way of stage directions, but there is a LOT of
room for creative design choices. It's about video games and killing -
blending virtual and real worlds. They really got a kick out of it.
