[Unix-help] Need Help in compressing large files

I have a problem in compressing a large file on LINUX/SOLARIS platform
. The file size if in GBs( usually more than 4 GB) . Gzip doesnt take
that big input . Im using "compress" , it works on SOLARIS but  it
fails on LINUX  ( it gives segmentation fault ) . Version of "compress
utility on my SOLARIS platform is 4.0 and on LINUX is 4.2.4 .
 
Can any one help me in this matter .
