TL;DR The UA is seeking undergraduates to serve on a new MIT committee on free expression around campus. APPLY HERE<http://tinyurl.com/24freecomm> or go to http://tinyurl.com/24freecomm.
Undergrads,
The MIT Faculty has just approved a new Ad Hoc committee on Academic Freedom and Campus Expression. The UA will be appointing representatives to the committee, ensuring students' voices and perspectives remain part of the conversation surrounding the very relevant topic of free expression around campus.
The UA is now actively recruiting for these representatives and encourages any students (any class year) with interest or relevant experience regarding free expression or academic freedom to apply. The committee's current approved timeline begins with the 2024 spring semester, so the recruitment process will be extremely expedited.
Application: We ask that interested students provide a written statement explaining why they are interested in participating in this committee, any relevant experience, and what they feel are the biggest challenges MIT is currently facing on the topic of academic freedom and freedom of expression. (APPLY HERE<http://tinyurl.com/24freecomm> or tinyurl: 24freecomm)
See more relevant info about the committee and the position below:
The charge to the committee can be found here<https://facultygovernance.mit.edu/committee/ad-hoc-committee-academic-freedom-and-campus-expression-cafce>.
Student Responsibilities: Some of the recommendations (see report p 20-22<https://facultygovernance.mit.edu/sites/default/files/20220901_Final_Report_of_the_Ad_Hoc_Working_Group_on_Free_Expression.pdf>) made by the Ad Hoc Working Group on Free Expression are closely tied to student life and student culture. In addition, we expect that there will be topics on which the students may be more well-versed than the faculty (e.g. the communications technological landscape). We expect student committee members to: participate in committee discussions; provide insights and advice on matters that touch student life; and serve as an interface with the broader MIT student community. Students will also be asked to read background material and make suggestions on recommendations or other written materials produced by the committee.
Time Commitment: We expect the committee to meet weekly for approximately one hour. In addition, students may be asked to review materials outside of the meetings. (We expect the review on average to be less < 1hr per week).
That's all for now - please consider applying if interested! Hope everyone's IAP is going well.
