UA Student-Faculty Meal Reimbursements
This semester, the UA Education Committee is once again offering a student-faculty “coffee quick chat” program: student-faculty meal reimbursements. If you and your friends would like to take a faculty member out for a coffee/meal, we will reimburse up to $15 per person (including the faculty member)!
Since we have a limited budget, the reimbursements will be on a first come, first serve basis. Additionally, we will be only offering one reimbursement per student per semester. We will be sending out the form for this semester in the coming weeks, so be prepared!
Please let us know if you have any questions, feedback, or concerns. Email us at ua-student-faculty-relations at mit.edu<mailto:ua-student-faculty-relations at mit.edu>

Science Policy Initiative Event in Advance of the 27th UN Climate Change Convention
Wednesday October 5th at 5 pm, 3-333
How can junior researchers have a positive impact on policy? RSVP here: https://forms.gle/5wNVNpCLNwM12FuU7
Full description: The 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) is fast approaching. For junior researchers with interest in sustainability, it might also feel quite far away, and it might be hard to see how to have a meaningful impact. The Science Policy Initiative, in coordination with the Office of the Vice President for Research, will host an event with the participants of MIT’s COP delegations, and targeted towards all young researchers at MIT interested in making a policy impact. We will have a conversation with Noelle Selin, professor of Earth and Planetary Science, and Data, Systems, and Society, and experienced expert for environmental policy, about how we can be helpful for policy. Among others, we will talk about the following two questions: How can researchers at the beginning of their career have positive impact in policy broadly? Concretely at a Climate Change Conference, what is a good use of the time and resources spent attending? Dinner will be served for first 30 to RSVP.

MIT Secular Society - Digging Deeper
For almost 200 years archaeologists have been digging in and around the land of Israel, producing awe-inspiring discoveries and an immense amount of scholarly literature on biblical events and characters. But how does the archaeological record compare with what the Bible says? What do we do when it’s in tension? What kinds of artifacts have been found that relate to biblical stories? Can archaeology be used to prove the Bible is true? For Subject 9 of the Secular Society of MIT’s Course 0 series, this information will be synthesized in a vivid, easy-to-follow presentation by biblical scholar and archaeologist Nate Ramsayer, who has spent the past ten years excavating at sites in Israel, Russia, and the U.K. Nate will help SSOMIT members to understand how material culture informs our modern perspective of ancient events. So grab your fedora and whip, and come learn about fascinating discoveries from the ancient world!

5.811: Fifty Years of U.S. Energy Policy — Lessons for the Future
Begins October 25th, 2022: Tuesday & Friday, 9:30 - 11:00 am.
Taught by Professor John Deutch, former US Deputy Secretary of Defense and Director of Central Intelligence
Open to undergraduate & graduate students.
Review the energy issues that arose and the U.S. policy responses from the Nixon administration in 1969 to the present administration of Joe Biden. What lessons can be learned from this experience and how should they shape the country’s current climate change policy? In what way might these lessons constrain our expectation about the pace, extent, and cost of success? Both domestic and international policy aspects will be addressed. ALL IN Election Panel: Democracy and the 2022 State & Federal Elections
October 12th, 2022, 7-8 PM ET - via Zoom
This panel explored democracy issues and how they’re at stake in the 2022 state and federal elections. Arguably, there is no issue in the election more central to the future of the country, and the state races now will determine who is in charge of election issues in 2024. Panelists include David Goldston<https://dc.mit.edu/about> (Director of the MIT Washington Office (Moderator)), Jessica Huseman<https://www.votebeat.org/authors/jessica-huseman> (Editorial Director of Votebeat), and Charles Stewart<https://polisci.mit.edu/people/charles-stewart-iii> (Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Political Science, MIT).
