Although awareness is an important component of the movement to end sexual violence, SAAM can be challenging, especially for those who have been affected by sexual violence, either through personal experience or the experience of a friend or loved one. We understand the issues being highlighted this month are sensitive and can be difficult to process alone. If you’d like to speak with someone, VPR<https://studentlife.mit.edu/vpr> is available M-F from 9am-5pm ET at (617) 253-2300. You can also call outside of these hours and leave a message for follow up from VPR. content warning: discussion of sexual violence and abuse below
Dear Undergrads,
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). We ask that you join UA Student Support and Wellness in both supporting survivors of and continuing the conversation around all forms of stalking, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence. Close to 35% of MIT undergraduates reported experiencing non-consensual contact in 2019.1<http://web.mit.edu/chancellor/aau/2019-AAU-Survey-Report-for-MIT.pdf> For more information, visit these sites to learn about: different forms of abuse <https://www.rainn.org/types-sexual-violence> and statistics<https://www.thehotline.org/stakeholders/domestic-violence-statistics/>surrounding harassment.
Relationship violence and the trauma that follows manifests in a variety of different ways. If you or someone you know feels powerless, coerced, or trapped in their relationship, information on how to get help can be found at this site<https://studentlife.mit.edu/vpr/resources-and-information>. To those who have experienced any form of relationship abuse or intimate partner violence (IPV), know that we are advocating for you, and you don’t have to go through this alone. We encourage you to call VPR<https://studentlife.mit.edu/vpr>, email S^3<https://studentlife.mit.edu/s3>, call MIT Mental Health<https://medical.mit.edu/services/mental-health-counseling>, reach out to your personal support networks, or attend some of the events listed below.
MIT is not impervious to these offenses, and our community must make an effort to understand how they manifest in and affect all of those at MIT. To start or continue your learning and advocacy, we would like to share information on some events occurring throughout the month:
UA SPECIFIC EVENT: SAAM SLAM
