Dear Undergrads,
Student voices matter. One of the most effective ways that the
Undergraduate Association can leverage student power to make change is
through Institute Committees (ICs) <http://ua.mit.edu/institutecomms>.
Students on Institute Committees work on some of the biggest issues at the
Institute and have *equal voting power *to the administrators, faculty and
staff who also serve on them.
Unfortunately, Institute Committees are not widely known or understood. We
want to change that and are hosting an *Institute Committee Info Session on
April 20th, at 6PM.*
This past year, MIT has taken the opportunity to step back and assess
various aspects of our community from the future impact of COVID-19 on
student life to the consequences of the Epstein scandal to diversity,
equity, and inclusion. This coming year, key decisions, often made in these
Institute Committees, will continue to shape the MIT student experience
both right now and in the future.
Institute Committees are focused on topics such as curriculum, DAPER,
student life, financial aid, DEI, commencement and more. Some of the
decisions that Institute Committees have made recently include:
- Creating the First Year Experiments

(PNR

- Crafting the Institute-wide 5 year strategic DEI plan
<https://deiactionplan.mit.edu/>
- Removing the SAT Subject test requirement
<https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/a-special-announcement-about-sat-subject-tests/>and
voting on financial aid changes
- Deciding what MIT's athletics facilities should look like in COVID
times
For those of you who want to make a lasting impact on MIT while interfacing
with faculty and leaders at MIT, this is a great opportunity! *Applications
will likely open (Monday, April 26) and will close on Wednesday, May 5. *Our
info session will give prospective applications insight into the work done
by our ICs through a a panel + Q&A session with several representatives on
various committees on April 20th, at 6PM (Zoom below). If you are
interested in applying to be a representative, we highly recommend you
attend this session as *demonstrated interest is weighed in the application*.
If you have a conflict and cannot attend, email ua-chief at mit.edu and I will
make sure to send you a link to the recording of the meeting!

do, visit: http://ua.mit.edu/institutecomms. Feel free to reach out to me
at ua-chief at mit.edu or current committee members to learn more!
