Happy New Year Undergraduates!

For those of you on campus, welcome back!

IAP is a great time to relax, try out new things, and meet new people.
Whether you're going to a museum, making your own guitar, or taking a new
PE, remember to find time to recharge and do the things you enjoy. If
you're planning an event, submit it here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zVbtXskaeNY51cfNeJp0cCdbjlrkSq07OWTTqv-2X3s/viewform>
for
it to be featured in The Byte!

*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair,
Allan Sadun
(ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):

IS&T is currently in a process of renovating and downsizing
<http://tech.mit.edu/V133/N55/athenacluster.html> the campus Athena
clusters, partially in response to cluster underutilization. But the
clusters haven't always been underutilized; alumni from even as recently as
the early 2000's tell stories about lines to get into 56-129. In the late
'90's, Athena was such an integral part of MIT student life
<http://tech.mit.edu/V121/N37/col37taoyu.37c.html> that nearly everyone,
regardless of whether or not they were Course 6, graduated with at least
basic UNIX familiarity.

The evolution and history
<http://tech.mit.edu/V119/N19/history_of_athe.19f.html> of Project Athena
is well-documented and surprisingly impactful. Although today people mostly
know it as a general-purpose computing network, Athenabegan
<http://tech.mit.edu/V105/N3/acal.03n.html> as a Bitcoin-Project-like
experiment
in technology and education <http://tech.mit.edu/V105/N3/athena.03n.html>,
with corporate sponsorship and floppy drives and everything. (Here
<http://simson.net/ref/1988/Turkle_Project_Athena.pdf> is a summary report
of how faculty started to use Athena for educational purposes.) Plus,
Athena gave birth to two technological innovations - instant messaging and
the X Window System - which are now used the world over.
