But the clusters haven't always been underutilized; alumni from even as recently as the early 2000's tell stories about lines to get into 56-129. In the late '90's, Athena was such an <a href="http://tech.mit.edu/V121/N37/col37taoyu.37c.html" target="_blank">integral part of MIT student life</a> that nearly everyone, regardless of whether or not they were Course 6, graduated with at least basic UNIX familiarity.</div></div><div style="font-size:12.8px"><div style="font-size:12.8px"><br></div></div><div style="font-size:12.8px"><div style="font-size:12.8px">The <a href="http://tech.mit.edu/V119/N19/history_of_athe.19f.html" target="_blank">evolution and history</a> of Project Athena is well-documented and surprisingly impactful. Although today people mostly know it as a general-purpose computing network, Athena<a href="http://tech.mit.edu/V105/N3/acal.03n.html" target="_blank">began</a> as a Bitcoin-Project-like <a href="http://tech.mit.edu/V105/N3/athena.03n.html" target="_blank">experiment in technology and education</a>, with corporate sponsorship and floppy drives and everything. (<a href="http://simson.net/ref/1988/Turkle_Project_Athena.pdf" target="_blank">Here</a> is a summary report of how faculty started to use Athena for educational purposes.)
