Sounds increasingly like a typical ballroom championship, where
there are separate categories for every possible combination of
age group, pro/amateur status, dance genres.... so as to
achieve the outcome that almost every participant get to bring
home a trophy at the end of the day.

It is long understood among ballroom teachers that most
"championships" are just charades to massage the peacocks'
egos and to squeeze more tuition money from students.
