Ref: Obliteration: Some points to ponder.......
Alberto Dassieu, who has danced tango for 60 years, was so happy to see
so many young people at his class at Oberlin College last Friday. He
said that in BA, the ave. age of women who start tango is 35, and the
ave. age of men who start tango is 40.
The old milongueros and musicians who were responsible for making the
tango what it is, are either gone or will shortly be gone for good.
The people who start dancing at 35 or 40 have only perhaps 30 years
possible of future in tango. When all the milongueros are gone (and I
don't think that there are very many "milongueros" today, except the
old ones), and if the "newer dancers" are divided in opinion about what
tango really is......then I do also believe that tango, as the original
milongueros danced it, is certainly on its way to extinction.
Moving along to the realm of science:
Scientifically speaking, tigers are endangered. People may say "but
there are plenty
of tigers owned privately by people who let them breed, surely there
are plenty of tigers...." However, scientists say that this
indiscriminate breeding by people who don't know what they are doing
results in animals who are inbred (making the individuals weaker and
weaker) and would never be suitable to be used in any way to
repopulate the species in the wild. And the small number of tigers in
zoos who do co-operate to ensure good breeding are just not able to
produce enough individuals to repopulate, due to financial and space
constraints. And even if they could, there is not enough habitat out
there (due to habitat destruction) to support more tigers. It's just
how it is.
Conclusion:
I think that traditional tango is being both inbred (and cross-bred)
out of existence.
But hey, it's just my opinion.
