Yesterday in a class, a couple of teachers (one Argentinian) talked about “leaders” and “followers”.  Coincidently, one thing mentioned was that as the woman becomes experienced she is able to “invite” the man to perform a move.

I usually avoid saying "leading" and "following" for exactly the
reasons you mention.
